WORKSHOPS – Sunday, 29 July 2018

WORKSHOP 1:  9am – 10.30am

Managing Difficult Behaviours

Who Should Attend:  Show Secretaries

The Show Secretary role is a large and complex role.  It often requires the Secretary to work with a diverse group of people with differing opinions on how tasks ‘should get done’.  This can put the Secretary in a difficult, and sometimes stressful position, of managing differing viewpoints and agendas in perhaps tense situations.  This workshop aims to provide participants with effective tools to improve outcomes when interacting with others.  It will explain how to differentiate between position and interest based discussions, staying calm, listening clearly, and constructively questioning the other party.  Tips and tactics from this workshop can be used around the meeting table or in discussions with stakeholders such as Trusts, suppliers, Councils and services that support the success of agricultural shows.

WORKSHOP 2:  11am – 12.30pm

Knowing Your Legal Liabilities

Who Should Attend:  All Show Executives (Presidents, Treasurers, Secretaries) and Volunteers

Conflict on committees is very common.  Sometimes conflict can lead to words or actions being taken that can be construed as unlawful.  Unlawful behaviour can lead to legal action under common law, fines, jail convictions or insurance claims.  Show Societies should be fully aware of what constitutes unlawful and inappropriate behaviour and the personal penalties they could face if they breach the relevant legislations.
