Grain Shovelling Competition
This old-fashioned test of muscle and endurance challenges competitors to shovel a set amount of grain as quickly as possible. It’s a nod to hard work on the land and a guaranteed way to get the crowd cheering as the piles disappear.
Competition Regulations
The Grain Shovelling Competition will be conducted in the following manner.
1. The competition groups will be:
- (a) Open
- (b) Team of Three (3)
- (c) Junior – Under 18 years
2. The Open and Junior competition will be individual and will be who can shovel the most grain by weight, from one half shuttle to another half shuttle in the time period of thirty (30) seconds.
3. The Team of Three (3) competitors will be open to any age/gender of its members and each member will be required to shovel for thirty (30) seconds with the overall weight determining the victor.
4. The receiving half shuttle will be sitting on a portable cattle scale to measure the weight and the weights will be zeroed after each competitor.
5. The shovel to be used during the competition will be supplied by the Show Society to allow consistency.
The grain shovelling is completed using a grain tipper trailer (approximately 3m from ground to top of trailer) hooked to a prime mover. The grain is loaded as it would be to cart from paddock to storage, so the grain stack is approximately 30-50cm lower than the top of the trailer.
Participants climb up the trailer using the ladder on the trailer and then proceed to shovel grain over the edge of the trailer into a grain hopper which is linked to scales.
Essentially, the shovelling process is similar to shovelling dirt into a wheel barrow, taking into consideration that the participants must get the grain over the edge of the trailer prior to falling into the grain hopper/scales.
After the appropriate time period the weight in the hopper is recorded, the grain is then augured out of the hopper back into the grain trailer before the next participant starts.
Once the participant has completed their shovelling they return to the ground and the next participant climbs onto the trailer to start their shovelling.
