At AgShows NSW, the safety and wellbeing of children and young people at our events is paramount.
While not every Show Society is legally required to register as a “child safe organisation” under the NSW Child Safe Scheme (as many operate only for a few days each year), all shows involve children as competitors, volunteers, or attendees.
For this reason, AgShows NSW strongly encourages all Show Societies to adopt the Child Safe Standards and implement robust child safety practices.
Key Responsibilities for Show Societies
- Working with Children Checks (WWCCs):
- Required for all staff, volunteers, and contractors in child-related roles.
- Even if your Show Society is not a formally recognised “child safe organisation,” WWCC requirements still apply.
- Important: Show Societies will not be automatically notified if a person’s WWCC status changes after verification. Always record details and re-check WWCCs regularly (ideally before each show).
- Codes of Conduct & Complaints:
- Follow best practice in developing and enforcing codes of conduct, complaint handling, and safe event planning.
- Follow best practice in developing and enforcing codes of conduct, complaint handling, and safe event planning.
- Induction & Training:
- Ensure everyone involved understands their child safety responsibilities.
Why This Matters
By adopting the Standards, Show Societies:
- Strengthen compliance with WWCC requirements.
- Demonstrate due diligence.
- Create a safe, inclusive environment where children and families feel welcome.
